Wake Forest Baptist Church has Sunday School classes for children, people with special needs, and adults. Classes meet at 10:00 am in Wingate Hall.
Children ages 3-10 spend the Sunday School hour engaged in Godly Play in Wingate Hall, Room 107. Godly Play is a Montessori-based curriculum meant to engage children in the mystery and wonder of God. The children meet for story time, where tactile elements are used in the telling of Biblical stories. Then the children choose their “work,” whether working with a big box of sand with wooden people crossing the desert during exodus times or connecting a cross shaped puzzle to the little baby Jesus with his arms out in the nativity. Elizabeth Corney tells the stories, and volunteers staff the activity time.
Our Special Needs Sunday School Class meets in the staff lounge, basement level, just off the Lower Auditorium in Wingate Hall. Created as one of the first special needs church classrooms in Winston-Salem, the adult students in this class have cognitive and sensory disabilities. They study Bible stories each week, and participate in a seasonal activity. Sally Gulley and Ruth Finley are the teachers, and the schedule is based on the availability of the students. Because of the nature of the class, please contact the church office for information about visiting.
The Stanton-Smiley Interfaith Dialogue Class is an adult class facilitated by Frank and Martha Wood and features a dual focus: Biblical passages, and exploration of other religious faiths. Broad member participation is expected and encouraged. The class gathers each Sunday in Wingate Hall, Room 202.
The Seekers Class, led by Jay Foster, reads a variety of texts, mostly related to Christian theology or biblical studies, like Marcus Borg’s The History of Christianity and Howard Thurman’s Jesus and the Disinherited. This class has also dabbled in interfaith studies, like Karen Armstrong’s The History of God, and in fiction, like Sue Monk Kidd’s The Secret Life of Bees. They are currently discussing Walter Brueggemann’s Sabbath as Resistance. The Seekers Class meets in Wingate Hall, in Room 206.
